Fitness Exercise Program- Why People Looking to Get Healthy & Lose Weight Should Follow One

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Believe it or not, there are millions of people all over the world that are trying all sorts of things in order to get healthy and lose weight but without following a fitness exercise program. Trying to lose weight and get healthy without a fitness exercise program is almost like trying to gain weight without food. It does not make sense. The only way for a person to be able to shed off all those unwanted extra pounds is by burning up the calories in their body. Burning up the calories in your body cannot be easily done by simply eating less food or by just changing your diet. You will have to go on a proper diet and this diet must be accompanied by a proper fitness exercise program if you want to reach your goal.

So, why should you follow a fitness exercise program?

* First and foremost, anything that has to be done well in this world needs a proper plan of action to be followed through to the end. Without a plan you will not be able to keep track of your progress. Having a fitness exercise program will make sure that you work every part of your body with the correct intensity and order.

* With the help of a fitness exercise program, you will know exactly how to work out your body. Some people want to lose weight but just do not have a clue as to when they should do what exercise and exactly how to do each exercise. It is hopeless to do the exercises you need without knowing how to do them properly. You will need a proper fitness exercise program that will guide you through each and every step of the way and teach you how to do the exercises that are necessary to burn those calories.

* With the correct kind of fitness exercise program, you will be able to use up the calories that need to be burnt to lose weight. For you to be able to shed off those unwanted pounds of fat, you need to make sure that your body is burning more calories than you are eating.

* Without a proper exercise program you may just be going for jogs in the evening and reaching home all sweaty and tired but in the end discovering that you have not achieved your goal. A proper program will let you know how many calories a certain workout regimen will get rid of and in what approximated amount of time. You will know that in two weeks this is the progress you should see and in a month another step and so on and so forth.

Drumming to Your Heart's Desire

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

If you are asked to picture a drummer more than likely the classic rock and roll type drummer will come to mind. Although drumming usually falls under this stigma it is important that you realize there are many different kinds of drums.

The wide variety of drums makes for a wide variety of drummers. If you are interested in drumming you have to make sure that you find the drums that suit you the best.

The first type of drums we will classify is that typical rock and roll drum set. These drums are very prevalent in our society and in music today.

First, there is a snare drum. The snare drum usually has a diameter that is just a little over a foot long and there is some type of wire or string strung across the bottom head.

After you strike a snare drum you will hear a slight buzzing noise, this buzzing is the direct result of the strings or wires in the drum. The snare drum has taken on a lot of variation in the past few years.

There is a marching snare drum which is deeper than the standard drum. It is worn on a harness and used in marching bands all across the nation.

There is also a piccolo snare. This drum is much shallower than the standard snare and it emits a tone that is much higher than the standard snare.

The last type of snare is very common in hip-hop music because of its extremely high pitched hit. These snares are called mini-snares and they are only about a half a foot in diameter.

The bass drum is another integral part of the typical drum set. It is most commonly almost two feet in diameter. The bass drum is played differently than the majority of drums that people play in the United States.

There is a pedal with a hammer like object at the end of the pedal. When you press the pedal the hammer like object strikes the bass drum and the noise that is emitted is very deep.

When you are listening to a drummer play on a drum set the drums that you will hear the most of are usually the tom toms or the toms. These drums are often times used during a fill.

The most melodic part of the drum set is the use of the tom toms. You will see the drummer playing these when he or she is playing a solo.

Besides these three drums you may hear a wide variety of cymbals that are attached to the drum set. These cymbals will have a dramatic affect on the way that the drum set sounds during a song.

First, you have the ride cymbal. This cymbal is a large usually being almost two feet in diameter.

The sound that comes from this brass instrument is usually quick and sharp. It fades quickly and many players use it to "ride" on or keep the beat during a song.

Hi hats are the second most common cymbals. These consist of two cymbals that are played on top of one another.

The first cymbal sits right side up while the second cymbal sits upside down. These are usually not struck by the drummer but instead are played by using a pedal.

The grouping of at least these drums is usually the set up that most drummers in rock bands have. When you have these drums together you can usually get a pretty decent drum set going for your song.

There are a lot of hand drums that people will add as accents in their work. The most common of these drums is the bongo.

There are usually two drums connected to one another and the drums are played with the drummers hands. Some people hold them in their lap or they put them on a stand and use different strikes and motions with their hands to change the sounds of the drum.

Bongos were first made popular in Cuba. It was not until recently that these drums became popular in the United States.

The congas are similar drums but they are not attached. You can see someone playing as many as four congas or as little as one conga.

The combination of congas and bongos has become very popular in American and Latin music. When someone plays these drums together they usually have two of each drum.

If you are looking to start drumming there are many kinds of drums available to you. Make sure that you find the drum that fits your personality and your style.

DISCOGRAPHY OF SLIPKNOT

DISCOGRAPHY OF SLIPKNOT

The discography of Slipknot, an Iowan heavy metal band, currently consists of four studio albums, one live album, fifteen singles, three video albums and two demos. These figures do not account for material released by members' side projects.

Slipknot was formed in September 1995 by vocalist Anders Colsefini, guitarist Donnie Steele, bassist Paul Gray and drummer Shawn Crahan under the name of The Pale Ones. Crahan moved to become a percussionist upon drummer Joey Jordison's arrival, and Josh Brainard was added as a second guitarist around the same time. The band played their first live performance on December 4, 1995 under the name of Meld, before Jordison suggested "Slipknot", the title of a song they were working on at the time. The band began recording songs in early 1996, during which time Steele left due to his Christian beliefs. He was replaced by Craig Jones, who moved to samples after current guitarist Mick Thomson joined. Slipknot's debut demo, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat, was released on October 31, 1996 without contributions from Jones or Thomson.

Slipknot recruited a new lead vocalist in 1997; Stone Sour's Corey Taylor. This moved Colsefini to backing vocals and percussion duty, though he left the band shortly afterwards and was replaced on percussion by Greg "Cuddles" Welts. By the end of the year, the band had adopted two traditions which they still adhere to today; uniform coveralls and individual numbers for all the members. In 1998 a second demo was recorded with contributions from a new member, turntablist Sid Wilson. Producer Ross Robinson showed interest in Slipknot, which helped them become noticed by record labels. On July 6, Welts became the first and only member to be formally fired from the band, being quickly replaced by Chris Fehn. On July 8, Slipknot signed to Roadrunner Records.

With a major label the nine-man unit began work on their full-length debut, disregarding Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., which the band themselves label a demo. Recording began in late-September 1998 and was essentially completed by November, at which point the band returned to their hometown of Des Moines. During the Christmas period, Brainard left the band for reasons still unclear. He was replaced by James Root, who recorded guitar on the final two tracks recorded in February 1999, "Me Inside" and "Purity". Slipknot was released on June 29 and on May 2, 2000 it became the first Roadrunner release to be certified Platinum by the RIAA.[1] The album was re-released in December 1999 with "Purity" (as well as its prelude "Frail Limb Nursery") removed due to copyright infringement (the track is set to appear on the 10th anniversary edition of the same album). Slipknot's second studio album was recorded in early 2001,[2] and released on August 28. Iowa was a huge commercial success, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200[3] and #1 on the UK Albums Chart.[4] Slipknot released their second video album (after Welcome to Our Neighborhood in 1999), Disasterpieces. The DVD was extremely successful, and has since been certified 4x Platinum in the US.[1]

After the releases of Iowa and Distasterpieces, Slipknot members redirected focus to side projects. Taylor and Root revived their old band Stone Sour, releasing their eponymous debut on August 27, 2002. Just one week prior to this, Murderdolls had released their debut album with Jordison on guitar. Crahan also created a side project in mid-2003, To My Surprise. Rumours that Slipknot had split up were snubbed and the band began recording their third album in late-2003. Produced by Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, System of a Down, Slayer), Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) was released on May 24, 2004. It reached #2 in the US,[3] but performed much worse than its predecessor in the UK, where it peaked at #5.[4] On November 1, 2005 9.0: Live was released. The band's first live album did not perform particularly well, reaching only #17 on the Billboard chart.[3] 2006 and 2007 contained more work with side projects, as Stone Sour released Come What(ever) May and Crahan founded Dirty Little Rabbits.

History of Straight Edge

History of Straight Edge

Straight-edge refers to a philosophy that's most basic tenets promote a drug free lifestyle. It developed as an offshoot of the punk rock/hardcore scenes of the early 1980's when the term itself is believed to have been coined by Ian Mackaye, in the self titled song, while he was the singer of the seminal hardcore band, Minor Threat. Mackaye eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple (almost simplistic) philosophy of "don't drink/ don't smoke/ don't fuck."

In the 12 years since the demise of Minor Threat, these simple beliefs have transformed the minds of scores of teens worldwide. Increasingly disenchanted with societal ills, young men and women adopt the straight-edge doctrine as a blueprint to better first themselves, and then the world in which they live. While the original definition of straight-edge only included the rejection of mind altering substances and promiscuous sex, modern interpretations include a vegetarian (or vegan) diet and an increasing involvement and awareness of environmental and political issues.

As noted, straight-edge grew out of the punk rock/hardcore scene and so music plays an important role. The Teen Idles, an early 80's Washington, DC hardcore band, and something of a precursor to Minor Threat, can arguably be called the first straight-edge band. Since that time there have been hundreds if not thousands of bands who've so labeled themselves. Early bands included Minor Threat, SSD and Uniform Choice. In the mid to late 80's, straight-edge hardcore reached a zenith, especially in the greater Metropolitan area of New York City. This atmosphere led to the creation of Gorilla Biscuits, Bold, Wide Awake and arguably the most prolific band of the era, Youth of Today. While the bands of this period did much to popularize straight-edge, they also contributed to its closeminded and antagonistic aspects. The attitude between straight-edge and the rest of the world often took on adversarial tones during this time, largely becoming "The positive youth crew versus people who drink, smoke and/or do drugs." Many people dislike straight-edge and its adherents because of such intolerant views.

Straight-edge today, while nothing like the "halcyon" days "back in '88," still offers a viable and positive lifestyle. Bands such as Strife, Mouthpiece, Earth Crisis and Snapcase, continue to proliferate and bear the standard. While its detractors often claim that straight-edge(rs) are no more than suburbanite, cliquish, fashion victims, few can argue that the philosophy is still valid. The drug-free lifestyle has left its positive impact on more than one wayward youth. Perhaps the ideals and ideas are more pertinent today than ever as the focus begins to reach beyond affecting merely oneself to altering and improving one's society and environment.

Guitarist's Checklist - ,

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

If you are thinking about starting to learn how to play the guitar, you need to know few things beforehand. As a beginner I had no one to direct me or give some tips on what I needed to have in order to see results. After many years of experimenting I have found that these 14 points are crucial for fast learning. They are in no particular order and are all equally important. Be sure not to skip over any of them.

1. A Metronome - The most important tool a musician can have

2. A Good Teacher - You need a good teacher who can point you in the right direction

3. A Lot Of Spare Time Devoted To Practicing - The more you practice the better you get

4. A Good Practice Plan - A good plan brings results faster

5. Taking Breaks Between Each Exercise - Giving your brain a minute to process the information is crucial for fast learning

6. A Good Theory Book - Having a good reference book helps tremendously when you have a problem 7. Tapping Your Foot With The Metronome - This develops your sense of rhythm which is the most important part of musicianship

8. A Decent Amplifier - Having a decent guitar sound motivates a person to practice more often than when having a dreadful one

9. A Decent Guitar - A beginner needs a guitar that is decent quality in order to enjoy practicing 10. A Lot Of Discipline - You have to have a lot of discipline because it will NOT always be fun to practice

11. Enthusiasm About The Instrument - Enthusiasm is what gets us through difficulties we face in our learning path

12. The Right Strings For Your Type Of Hands - We all have different type of hands and it is important to find the right gauge strings that feel easy to play

13. A Good Setup On The Guitar - Having a good setup can turn even a cheap guitar into very enjoyable playing experience

14. The Right Pick For Your Style Of Music - There a many picks of different thicknesses. If you are only playing chords on the guitar, choose a lighter gauge. If you are playing a lot of lead lines, choose a heavier gauge.

Be sure that you have everything on the list. It will make your learning experience a whole lot more enjoyable and fun.

American Power Metal And European

Different Factors of Power Metal

The majority of the types growls or screams you will discover with this genre often reflect the style you should find in black metal or death metal. The vocals are what really identifies power metal. There are several vocalists that have made a bigger stand than others. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Ronnie James Dio (Dio) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest) are the ones that got power metal started. Singers like Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Michele Luppi (Vision Divine) and Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius) expanded this style.

You will discover quite a few bands that sing about mythology and fantasy in power metal. But usually they were more about fictional events. Bands like Symphony X, Hammer Fall, DragonForce and 3 Inches of Blood really followed this trend. Where bands like Helloween, Gamma Ray and Lost Horizon were more about hope and expectation.

Technique and Instruments of Power Metal

With slower chord progressions in their music, power metal continues to have high harmonic tempos. With that said you can always watch for crazy fast and ridiculous guitar solos within their music.

Drummers will use a dual bass drums or double bass pedal on their sets in Power Metal. You'll discover a lot of this in heavy metal music. Heavy metal music is know to possess this kind of drumming within their music. Bands such as Nightwish and Rhapsody use keyboards to further improve their sound. There's various ways that most power metal bands use a keyboard. One is to have a complete melody and another is usually to insert quick accents into their music.

Cultures within Power Metal

If you examine American power metal with European power metal, you will find a similar taste but faster in America. American power metal had higher vocal singing and heavier distortion within their music. If you want to see more about American power metal take a look at Manowar, Savatage and Iced Earth.

European metal put more melody within their music. Folk metal inspires a lot of metal bands. This is why there is more of a melodic feel with their music. You will get faster palm mutes and less guitar distortion in their power metal. Power metal has grown to be one of the most popular metal genres. For further European metal check out Helloween, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica.

Everything You Need to Know About Guitar Strings

Sunday, May 16, 2010

If you're only just starting out on the guitar, you may never have needed to buy new strings just yet let alone come across the term "gauge", so it's easy to be a little confused when you first hear the word.

Basically, guitar string gauges are usually described by their thickness to a thousandth of an inch. The majority of guitarists use either 9's or 10's. What these means is, the thin E string on their guitar is either 9 thousandths or 10 thousandths of an inch thick.

If you're a beginner then you might be best to use 9's to start with, a good set of these are the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky or Rotosound Yellows.

Generally, heavier strings give a richer and more full sound, however are also harder on the fingers and can be quite difficult to play when trying to bend notes. Lighter strings, such as 9's are easier on the fingers, especially when bending or sliding notes, however they do sometimes break a little easier.

Some packs of strings even mix and match gauges. Most major string brands have a range that allows you to match the top and bottom strings to suit your style... so if you like to easily bend your high strings when playing lead but pound the bottom strings when playing rhythm then you can chose a suitable combination.

Just for reference here is a list of all the string gauges offered by Ernie Ball (probably the most well known string company)

2215 - Skinny Top Heavy Bottom 10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52 2220 - Power Slinky 11, 14, 18p, 28, 38, 48 2221 - Regular Slinky 10, 13, 17, 26, 36, 46 2222 - Hybrid Slinky 09, 11, 16, 26, 36, 46 2223 - Super Slinky 09, 11, 16, 24w, 32, 42 - Recommended for beginners 2225 - Extra Slinky 08, 11, 14, 22w, 30, 38 2626 - Not Even Slinky 12, 16, 24p, 32, 44, 56 2627 - Beefy Slinky 11, 15, 22p, 30, 42, 54

You may wonder what the "w" and "p" mean on some of the above string gauges. "P" stands for plain, which means the string is basically just a straight piece of wire. Whereas, "W" are strings which are wound, which means there is a thin bit of wire in the middle tightly wound with a wrapping of even thinner wire to make up the total thickness of the string.

In most cases the first and second strings with be "plain", whereas the 3rd to 6th strings will be "wound". Whenever this is not the case, then it is stated by adding either a "p" or "w" after the string gauge.

How often you change your strings basically depends on how often you play and what type of strings you use.

If you are new the guitar and find yourself playing quite a bit each day then it might be best to change your strings once every 4 - 6 weeks. The reason for this is that overtime when playing the guitar the strings become greasy and dirty which makes them lose their tone, and can sometimes go rusty and snap.

There are a few basic ways in which you can extend the life of your strings. This is as simple as:

* Washing your hands before you play the guitar

* Wipe your strings with a cloth or string cleaning product after playing to remove any sweat or grease. GHS Fast Fret String Cleaner is a great product to use on your strings and will keep them clean and sounding crisp for longer.

What Are The Signs That I Need To Change My Strings?

* Sound - When you play a guitar with new strings you will hear a very bright and crisp sound, even when the guitar is not amplified. Overtime, this will begin to fade and the strings can sound very dull. If you like that initial crispness when you play new strings then you might consider replacing them.

* Dirt and Grease - When you begin to feel a build up on the strings when you play them it's a definite sign that need changing. From frequent playing, the strings with gather sweat and oil from your fingers. If you don't clean the strings then this will build up and will make the strings feel harsh on your fingers and also lose sound quality.

* Broken Strings - This might sound like a no brainer, but I'm not just talking about replacing the broken string. When you break a string, it's often because it is dirty or gotten a little rusty. If a string breaks for this reason then its most likely the other strings are in the same condition too. Rather than just replacing the one broken string it's a good idea to replace the entire set.

History of Minor Threat

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Minor Threat was an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1980 and disbanded in 1983. The band was relatively short-lived, but had a strong influence on the hardcore punk music scene. Minor Threat's song "Straight Edge" became the eventual basis of the straight edge movement, while the band often professed their own "straight edge" ideals.[1] Allmusic described Minor Threat's music as "iconic,"[2] and noted that their "groundbreaking" music "has held up better than [that of] most of their contemporaries."[3]

Along with the fellow Washington, D.C. hardcore band Bad Brains, Minor Threat set the standard for many hardcore punk bands in the 1980s and 1990s. They produced short, often astonishingly fast songs, eventually with high production quality, which at the time was lacking in most punk rock. All of Minor Threat's records were released on Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson's own label, Dischord Records.
